Effects of Time and Degree of Fruit Thinning on the Fruit Quality , Yield and Return Bloom in Kiwifruit

Abstract
Elbects of time and degree of fruit thinning on fruit quality, yield and return bloom of kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis Planch. cv. Hayward) were investigated in Wando and Damyang for 3 years. Among 4 thinning treatments of 20 fruits per square meter at the first white stage of blooming, full bloom, 10 and 20 days after full bloom (DAFB), higher fruit weight and yield per vine were obtained with the earlier thinning dates. The percentage of marketable fruits decreased significantly with 20 DAFB thinning. Hand pollination after thinning increased fruit quality significantly. Fruit weight and percentage of marketable fruits increased as the thinning severity increased, but fruit yield decreased. There was a positive correlation between seed number and fruit weight. Fruit weight increased as the leaf: fruit ratio reached 3:1. Fruits of severely thinned vines contained more reducing sugar, acid and vitamin C, but less starch. Fruit set decreased as the thinning rate decreased.
